Nocturnal to Diurnal

Patient

Q: I am 24 and have been having problems sleeping for about 10 years now. My body seems to naturally act as if I am nocturnal where I am tired during the day yet wake up literally once the sun has set. If I do manage to get to sleep then I end up waking up every couple hours for approximately two to three hours before I can fall back asleep. About three years ago my PCP tried to conduct a sleep study on me but I was unable to go to sleep. I was prescribed Ambien CR but as I am a teacher and need to be fully alert, I cannot take it during the work week. During the week I have tried everything from Melatonin tablets, to Unisom as well as PMs. These SOMETIMES help me become tired, but not on a consistent basis as I would like. Is there a way to try and get my sleep cycle on a diurnal track that does not involve medication?
