Nurofen for back pain

Patient

Q: Hello, I have been experiencing quite a lot of upper left back pain in the rhomboid area for the past few months. I can bear it throughout the day but I can't sleep without painkillers (one tablet of nurofen plus will help me sleep). I've seen the GP and physiotherapist and have been asked to do stretches and workouts focussing on the back, but the short term pain is still quite intense. I'm worried that I've been taking nurofen too long as it has codeine (I'm a medical student and have learnt about the addiction properties of opiates), but I can't sleep without it. To specificy, I've been taking one tablet of nurofen for about the past 4 months. I've not felt any adverse reactions as of yet, so is it okay to still take it? I've tried paracetamol, ibuprofen and even ibuprofen gel but none of them have helped.
