Persistent morning erections affecting sleep

Q: I have been getting strong erections in the morning for the past year that has been affecting my sleep. It is not a normal morning erection.

It happens every time I sleep, and it takes a while to go away, usually requiring walking around. However once I go back to sleep I will wake up an hour or two later with a slightly painful erection again. It seems to be getting more frequent and stronger as time goes on.

Having sex/masturbating before sleeping doesn't affect it.

Had a physical a week ago, nothing out of the ordinary.

What can cause this?
