Posterial lateral pain in leg

Q: Recently I have been dealing with pain ranging from dull to sharp pain in the posterior lateral side of my knee in the areas of fibular head, upper calf region (popliteus) and also tightness running up along the posterior lateral portion of thigh when walking down hill or stairs, also side to side movements and also kicking a soccer ball. I have seen a sports doctor and he told me that there did not appear to be anything structurally wrong with my knee. He did say that my hamstrings were tight and that I should stretch them, but I want to know what might be the underlying cause. Any thoughts?
