Patient : A woman who is 11weeks pregnant learnt that she has bipolar affective disorder. She reveals the fact that for the past year, she has taken Lithium to threat this. However, when she learned she was pregnant, at 7weeks gestation, her psychiatrist switched her a Depakote (Valproic acid) -What, if anything are the risks to this woman's pregnancy. -Are the risks different if the woman switched medication at 4 weeks gestation? How? - If she switched at 9 weeks gestation? How? - Is she switched at 13 weeks gestation? How? Are these risks any different if the woman was on Valporate until 7 weeks and then switched to Lithium?
