Red, oozing belly button in a toddler

Patient

Q: I have a 7 month toddler whose belly button is red and oozing pus which dries to a white colour. what are the possible causes and how can I remedy it.

Doctor

A:   Red, oozing pus discharge from the belly button indicates infection. It needs to be treated with antibiotics and regular care and hygeine is important to prevent the spread of infection. In my opinion you should consult your baby’s pediatrician for adequate treatment.
