The rotator cuff is actually a group of four muscles that help to stabilize the shoulder joint. one or multiple muscles may be injured in a rotator cuff injury. The type of repair depends on which muscles are injured and if there is injury to the shoulder ligaments as well which quite often occurs as well. Surgical repair is not considered unless non-surgical methods of treatment fail. Non-surgocal treatment includes physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. Surgery, when indicated, involves removal of dead tissue and reattachement of tendons and ligaments or possibly muscle transfers.
