"runners knee" thinking about a lateral release?

Patient : I am 16 and I used to run all the time in cross country and track. My orthopedic said no more running back in October because of my knees I have been doing physical therapy twice a week since then. They told me I had "runners knee". It doesn't seem to be helping I have tried everything ice, braces, tape. I go back in 8 weeks for a followup with the orthopedic to maybe talk about a lateral release. I don't think I can wait that long its effecting everything in my life including school. I can barley walk up stairs anymore. Its in both knees. I need help any ideas?
