Patient : Dear Doctor,
I am 26y, Female (DOB:05-JAN-1985)-Married. height-160cm and weight- 76kg. Recently I had gone for a medical check up as I was anxious to conceive. I am not a diabetic person and I have not had a history of pregnancy.
I had done glucose tolerance test and serum Insulin as part of that on 12-JAN-2012. My glucose tolerance values were normal (fasting 103 mg per dl, 1hr- 161 mg per dl, 2hr- 116mg per dl). Serum Insulin at fasting was 6.1uIU per ml (ref. range 0-10) and Serum Insulin 1 hour after oral glucose was 240uIU per ml (ref. range). Doctor prescribed me Metformin 500mg TID for three months. Kindly suggest me what is the high insulin level referring to. I am diabetic?. Is it caused because I am overweight?. Kindly suggest whether Metformin is safe for a long term use (for a second opinion from a physician)?
