Patient :I am 55 yrs old, female and my doctor is recommending that I get a hysterectomy... removal of my uterus and possibly ovaries (while she's in there) due to a fibroid tumor that is 1/2 the size of my uterus. I also have pelvic prolapse due to a traumatic birth and episiotomy 30 yrs ago so she is recommending a bladder sling also due to me getting a sudden urge and wetting myself sometimes. I keep asking her if mesh would be used, I don't want any mesh inside of me, and she keeps skirting the issue saying a LITTLE bit will be used but that my own tissue would also be used. I had to have my pap done by another doctor due to my insurance (Medi Cal), it was done after the surgery was recommended and the results came back as abnormal (1st stage abnormal). I also had a bladder stress test performed and the results apparently were confusing. Here is what I need to know... Would a fibroid that is 1/2 the size of my uterus be considered huge? Is it possible to have a bladder sling inserted without using any mesh? Would a bladder sling help an URGENCY incontinence condition? Should ovaries be removed just because "you're in there anyway?" Is a power morcellator used when performing a laparascopic surgery? And how does my abnormal pap now affect all of this? It has been VERY confusing to say the least and I have to wait til JUNE to get a second opinion. I need some advice please!
