Side effects of MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) ?

Patient: I have a sulfa allergy. Can I take MSM or medications with “sulfate” in tne name?

 

 

Doctor: Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organosulfur compound used in the treatment of chronic pain, osteoarthritis, joint inf flammation, rheumatoid arthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Since MSM contains sulfur, it is not recommend for use in persons with sulfa allergy. Other side effects of MSM include nausea, diarrhea, bloating, fatigue, headache, insomnia, itching, or worsening of allergy symptoms.
