Sore Throat that has lasted for months and won't go away

Q: I have had a sore throat for several months(around 6 or 8 months maybe). It is so painful it sometimes keeps me up at night. It is on the left side only and my left tonsil is swollen. It sometimes hurts more and some times less. I don't know what is causing it. I don't know if it is irritated from dripping sineces or a cold? I had mono about 5 years ago. I have tried everything to stop it. Cough drops, throat coat tea, gargeling salt water, treating my allergies. Nothing seems to help.

Symptoms:  Sore throat, swollen tonsil, head ache
