Stenosis of Gastric Anastomosis

Patient

Q: Why is full liquid diet prescribed after dilation of stenosis of gastric anastomosis? What are the repercussions of not following the diet?

Doctor

A:   Such a diet is prescibed to avoid the potential complication of solid food becoming "stuck" at the gastric anastomosis and causing obstruction of the passage. If the this passage becomes blocked, there can be serious consequences with severe vomiting and dehydration which may lead to a coma and death.
