Stomach back and side pain not responding to pantoprazole

Q: Category stomach pain.
I have been experiencing sharp stomach pain on the upper left side under my ribs. It feels like a sharp poke . My doctor prescribed pantoprazole 40mg for eight weeks which helped after a month of taking them and I had virtually no pain. As soon as the course was finished my doctor reduced the dosage to 20mg and immediately the symptoms returned. The slight nausea, growling stomach , side and back pain on left side , hunger pains even when I had just eaten dyspepsia and flatulence and I was forced to double the dosage to 40mg again to get some relief. I have been taking the higher dose for just over a week and symptoms have lessened but not gone away. I am visiting my doctor soon, but I am very frightened that the treatment failed and I don't know what is truly wrong with me. I don't drink nor smoke. I am of . Normal weight and otherwise in good health. I am 39 years old and female. I only take oral contraceptives. What could this be?
