Sugically induced Erectile Dysfunction

Patient

Q: I am suffering from erectile dysfunction due to a hemicolectomy with ileostomy in 1998. I've been taking Viagra or Levitra since this surgical procedure. Can the cause of my ED be repaired or reversed back to normal?

Doctor

A:   There are surgical procedures which may restore normal erectile function. Their success depends on the underlying cause of the dysfunction and thus each individual must be evaluated completely before undergoing such a procedure. If the blood supply to the erectile tissue of your penis was damaged during your hemicolectomy then a revascularization procedure may be of benefit to you. You would need to discuss such a procedure at length with a urologist who has special expertise in this area.
