Taking the pill for two months

Q: I was advised by a doctor who is not my own doctor, that when taking the pill you can take two months in a row, and if you get any spotting to just stop taking it for four days and start again, is this correct or does it just mess up your cycle?

I was 8 days into my second month when I got some spotting, so I stopped taking the pill, today would be the fourth day so I should start taking it again? or should I wait the full 7 days?

even though I took the extra eight days, on the 2nd month
