Three Year Old Child With Hemoptysis

Patient

Q: He?s 3 years old and coughs up blood. This happens specialy at night and it has been going on for 2 days now. He has a little fever too. What can we do?

Doctor

A:   Young children usually swallow their sputum; as a result, coughing up blood is rare in children younger than six years of age unless the bleeding is substantial. I would suggest that you take your child to the ER immediately.
