Thumping in left ear

Patient

Q: I have been having a thumping sound in my left ear for several months now. While visiting with my PCP I asked what it could it be and he said it was probably my heartbeat, but didn't know why. Have you ever heard of this before, and if so, what could be the cause? Is there reason for concern? This is beginning to drive me crazy. It doesn't do it all the time, but when it starts up it can continue for quite awhile.
