Transmission of cold/flu virus via sexual contact

Patient

Q: Can you get the flu or cold by having sex with someone that has the cold?

Doctor

A:   Flu/cold are usually transmitted by the aerosol route( respiratory droplets) and thus while they cannot be transmitted through sexual intercourse ( ie penetration per se) it can be transmitted through kissing and respiratory droplets during close contact with a person with a cold.
