Turbinates and nasal atrophy

Patient

Q: I had surgery 3 years ago for a deviated septum. About 3 months ago my nose and throat became very dry and I had two doctor's tell me that my inferior nasal turbinates were reduced by 1/3-2/3 or slightly less than 50%. Will this cause my nose to atrophy further?

Symptoms:  Nose and throat dryness
Doctor

A:   Thank you for your question.

This is an incidental finding and should have no future implications. In patients with large turbinates, reduction is done to reduce snoring or blockage.

In patients with smaller turbinates, no surgery or treatment is warranted.
