Undiagnosed knee pain

Patient : I've had pain in both my knees for just under a year now. I used to do a lot of horse riding, but I stopped because of the pain, and I've only recently just started running. They hurt when I walk up stairs, and when I have them bent for a long time. When I straighten them, I can feel them grind and crack. I've been to the doctors twice - the first one said it was a mild sprain, and the second one said it was because I was growing. When I run I have to wear a knee brace to help ease the pain, and the pain is that bad some days that I can't do anything. Also, I've had a sore right ankle when running, and I don't know if these are connected. Thank you.
