Vitamin D production

Patient

Q: Hi. My local docter told my mom over the phone that my body is not able to produce vitamin D anymore and that I have to take supplements for the rest of my life (They did a blood test). She did not give any details or whatsoever, only a vitamin D pills prescription. I was wondering, If the body is not able to produce vitamin D by itself, could I still get vitamin D from the sun? Thank you.
