Waking up confused several times during the night

Patient : Some nights I wake up three or four times, thinking that it's morning. I start getting dressed and look at the time. Despite the time clearly being 4am (e.g.), I'm still convinced that I should be getting up and it takes me a couple of minutes to realise that I should still be in bed. Whenever this occurs it occurs more than once per night, and it seems to happen when I'm very tired, but quite rarely. Is this normal? How can I stop it?
Symptoms:  Waking up during the night, confusion.
