What is the relationship between sugar and depression?

Q: After quitting the birth control pill, I began suffering from severe feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. I was constantly comparing myself to other girls and obsessing over my looks. I had never done this to such an extent before, and it drove me to deep emotional lows. After about two years of this, I cut sugar out of my diet (for other reasons). Within days, my moods were back to normal! I felt like a black cloud cleared away. Now, if I overindulge in sugar, I will suffer a bout with the same mood swings. Any idea of what is physically happening? I can't tell if it's diet, hormones, or both.
