When is the best time to get a beta hcg?

Patient

Q: Hi..I took a blood hcg aboug 8 days after a possible conception ..is there any way I could get a false negative? If so when is it the best time to get a blood hcg?

Doctor

A:   Typically a beta hcg test done 12 to 14 days post ovulation would be more accurate for confirming pregnancy. Considering the expense involved if there is no previous bad obstetric history doing a home pregnancy test once you miss your periods would be a better option to confirm a pregnancy.
