White Blood Cell Count Elevation

Patient: I had a CBC completed after a general check up, as I had not had a CBC completed before. My doctor called me and was very brief stating, ‘You have elevated WBC and low hematocrit’ and that she would like to follow up count in 2 months and sent me a paper with the measurement 288.60 for my ‘elevated WBC count.’ What does this mean? I am confused as I thought WBC were in the thousands.
